Breast Cancer May Be More Likely to Recur in Heavier Women

A recent study published in the journal Cancer has found that overweight and obese women may be more likely to experience a recurrence of their cancer and even death. One of the lead authors of this study, Dr. Joseph Sparano, stated “We found that obesity at diagnosis of breast cancer is associated with about a 30 percent higher risk of recurrence and a nearly 50 percent higher risk of death despite optimal treatment.”

There are still many unanswered questions about the relationship between a person’s weight and risk of recurrence, but this study does draw attention to the role of diet and exercise in the diagnosis, treatment, and possible recurrence of breast cancer. More research needs to be done to determine whether lifestyle modification could lead to an improvement in long term outcomes for those diagnosed with breast cancer, and hopefully this study will help to set this investigation in motion.
